During the 1950's when the trade unions in Banking Industry were yet to emerge, the Bank of India Staff Union was a source of inspiration to the employees in other banks in the City of Bombay. In fact he was one of the founders of the union, when it came into being in March 1946.
Com VM Chitnis was a pillar of the bank employees trade union movement in Maharashtra. For two terms, he had also functioned as Director in the Board of Management of the Bank. He was well known for his uncomprising courage and conviction while pursuing his trade union activities.
During the period of Sen and Sastry Tribunals, Com Chitnis had played a very useful and impressive role. During that period he came into contact with some of the veterans of our movement like Com Prabhat Kar and Com HL Parvana. He undertook many tasks, connected with the Tribunal work.
