Com GN Trikannand was Born on February 18, 1922. Educated up to the British India Education Institute class. He first joined the British India Education Institute for Rs.30/- per month but resigned on defiance. Subsequently, he joined Bank of India in 1941 as a Clerk in Head Office, Mumbai for a salary of Rs.40/- + DA Rs.10/-. He involved himself in the freedom movement in 1941 along with the student movement. Later he involved in the Quite India Movement also. He along with a group of students worked late night for drafting anti-British pamphlets and posters. It was a time anti Indian attitude by the management especially towards the working class (clerks & subordinate staff). Com GN Trikannand was the voice of the suppressed. He faced many intimidations from the management for supporting the co-workers. But he never subdued his support to the bank workers.
When the Bombay Labour Union movement was in peak in which workers from all other industries had already joined and bank workers were also united but gradually. Com GN Trikannand with the support of then leaders Com Shirali formed the Bombay Bank Employees Federation and Bank of India Federation. He was the Founder General Secretary of both the organization almost for two decades.
He not only united the members and fought for bank workers but he influenced the various awards right from Sen Award. When the working hour of the bank employees was increased, he united the bank workers and employees of Bank of India alone went on strike with trust and belief on Com GN Trikanbnand. All the resultant vindictive actions of the management was also defeated with unity and courage.
Com GN Trikannand took many cases to the tribunals and placed arguments based on cost of living and wage index across the country. He visited, Delhi, Calcutta, Madrass and many other places to unite members and organized the workers into unity and union. He played vital role in improved confidence among employees with legal awareness. Com GN Trikannand had not only argued for rights of the workers, but also the need of customer service. He had mentioned in his interview that it is our duty remove the problems of ordinary customers within our means.
He played pivotal role in AIBEA also. He was the Vice President and Assistant Secretary AIBEA from 1950 to 1960. Life of Com GN Trikannad is a powerful example of courage, sacrifice, and commitment to justice. From facing harsh working conditions to becoming a key leader in the trade union movement, his journey highlights the importance of unity and perseverance. His contributions not only improved the lives of bank employees but also strengthened the foundation of organised labour in India, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire.
